Problem: This project for the Birmingham Alabama Water Works Department involved shutting off the water in an electrical manhole. This job was especially difficult due to the high voltage and overwhelming volume of water leaking in. The manhole is located less than 50 feet from the reservoir and the top of the lid is about 4 inches above water table. The volume was over 800 gallons per minute. SSCI Solution: Using hydraulic pumps provided by the city we lowered the water in the manhole so we could work. With the water flow reduced we drilled the manhole and injected Polyurethane resin with plural component equipment. Within minutes the three major leaks were shut down. One full day of work and the manhole was dry. The only inflow is coming from the duct bank and is easily handled, less than 1/4 gallon per hour. Return to Commercial Services
